Headline: Two big days riding 230km from Mt Cook to Kurow
Who were the great adventurers??: Ig/Ant, Ian, Andrew & Owen
What happened/what did we learn?
– Owen got to Kurow with minutes to spare after a flight delay caused last minute drama, only for Mikey Julius to come to the rescue with a textbook Le Mans style vehicle handover at Christchurch Airport
– Owen kept Ig awake without snoring. A natural reaction to an abrupt end to an hour of rolling thunder
– There are better sounds to wake to in the morning than the crackling of a turd exiting Andrew
– Ian loves plastic bags full of powder
– Ig can’t ablute if Andrew is chatting to him from another stall
– We were super lucky with the weather on Saturday morning, got a great look at Mt Cook
– Ig and Ian have listening skills reminiscent of children, they thought they had been left behind went the bikes took a flight
– Classic adventure racing route to start with: our feet got wet from fording a stream
– Lake Pukaki looks awesome on a fine day and the bottom of the lake looks a very long way away from the top
– Fresh local salmon tastes great
– Ian chickened out on going over to the bikies in Twizel and telling them they were gay
– Ohau is appropriately named – it means windy place. The last few miles along the road were character building
– Owen’s recovery time after day 1, according to Garmin, was 70 hours!
– Ohau Lodge was a great spot to relax after the first day
– Andrew doesn’t know his lefts from his rights
– Did we see one of the tamest hen do’s in recent history?
– Looking at Andrew’s options on the local dating sites was scary
– Climbing is fine with the wind at your back
– It’s a sweet descent from the Tarnbrae high point down to Quailburn
– The Wrinkly Ram (Omarama) has good coffee
– Magpies dive-bomb
– Tubeless tyres are rubbish if you pierce the tyre wall
– Dams are good places for intermediate sprints
– Ian won all of the duals with Ig that Ig didn’t compete in, and a couple of others 😉
– Andrew had a shot at the title on the last climb into Kurow, but Ig held him off
– Ian still owes Owen $10 for blocking Ig on the race into Kurow
– It was an epic weekend!!
